Food is Power. Food is Social. Food is Home.
Grain Freedom is a nonprofit private foundation created as a resource for the celiac and dietary-restricted community. Nutrition equity is the freedom and dignity in food that will support health and nutrition. This website provides information for people on gluten-free diets due to celiac disease, gluten intolerance, wheat allergy, food allergies/intolerance, dietary restrictions, or other food-related health conditions. We raise awareness, create conversations, and support those in the celiac and food allergy community. We do this by helping those newly diagnosed, donating gluten-free and top 9 allergy-friendly food to local food banks, supporting food equality rights, giving to summer camps that provide safe food to campers, and fighting to find a cure. We deeply care about those in these communities. We feel that important things happen around a table, and those with diet-related conditions should not be excluded from the table. So gather together and share. Break gluten-free bread with glad and generous hearts, y'all!
When our daughter was diagnosed at two years old, we had no idea how life-changing celiac disease would be for our whole family. Life's daily activities involve food. Food is power. Food is home. Food is social. This autoimmune disease affects every part of your life, from food to medicine to toothpaste. It affects you 24/7 at home, school, and social life. This disease becomes your identity. It becomes psychological as it is easy to feel different and left out of all social situations involving food. Ask anyone with celiac how many times they have had to decline invitations. Food pressure is real. It can be embarrassing if you are not eating or have specific food restrictions. Embarking on a gluten-free diet is like the Wild West. It can be very challenging as there is so much unknown and so much to learn. Those with celiac disease, especially children, lose the right to have a carefree eating lifestyle. Unfortunately, today's society harbors microaggressions towards those with dietary restrictions. We want to help our communities understand and include those who have celiac disease, food allergies, and intolerances.
After going gluten-free, we found ourselves in several scary situations where gluten-free food was scarce due to natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic. Our family was fearful and wanted to ensure our daughter had the nutrition she needed. Fresh produce and gluten-free food can be challenging to find and very expensive. We are an organization with purpose and hope. We aim to positively impact the celiac/ dietary restricted/ food allergy and intolerance community by becoming a resource so they can "grain" their freedom by finding ways to make life with the disease more manageable and less stressful.
Our mission is to improve the health of those diagnosed with diet-related conditions due to celiac disease and food allergies. We aim to end hunger through access to safe and healthy food, education, and advocacy so that we do not manage but thrive and have "grain" freedom!
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that occurs in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten damages the small intestine. It is a severe disease that causes a wide variety of terrible symptoms. Right now, the only treatment is a 100% gluten-free diet. It is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide. It is estimated that 2.5 million Americans are undiagnosed and are at risk for long-term health complications. At the moment, there are 3 million Americans with this disease. Celiac disease can be complicated to diagnose, given its various symptoms and how it affects people differently. Also, many have never heard of the disease. Gluten-free food is our medicine. It is not a trend but a treatment.
